Rajni’s ‘spiritual politics’ sparks speculation

CHENNAI: Megastar Rajnikanth could align with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) though he has announced that his new party will contest all 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. The inference comes from his statement that he will pursue “spiritual politics.”

Rajni is known to be spiritual person who relies on astrology before making his moves. One of the reasons seen behind his delaying the formation of a party is the lack of approval from his astrologer.

Rajni has gurus drawn form ascetics and he follows their guidance too. It is known among Kollywood folks that the BJP, which was chasing him over the years, has used some of these persons to influence him.

However, Rajni fans association leaders reject such theories and insist he will stay away from all political parties. Each of his over 100,000 fans associations has a membership of 25 on an average, meaning that it totals 2.5 million, the largest any actor in India has. This 2.5 million holds a solid base for him and he does not need the help of any political party. The BJP today remains a poor runner, with just about five per cent votes in the state.

The BJP on Monday claimed he will definitely align with them. Rajinikanth on Monday met his fans in front of his house in Poes Garden and wished them a happy New Year.

Clad in traditional veshti and sattai, he came out of his house and waved to his fans, who had gathered from various part of the state to meet him on the first day of the new year.

Rajnikanh on Monday launched a website and mobile application urging people to join him in the fight against corruption.

The 67-year-old posted a video on Twitter to make the announcement. “I have created a website, to bring all of them together to make this possible. So please register yourself using your voter Id number,” he says in the video.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), meanwhile, played down Rajnikanth’s announcement. DMK spokesperson Saravanan said the star would not fare well in politics because he was aligning with the BJP.

“He has knowingly or unknowingly created a perception that he is aligned with the BJP or rather the BJP is aligning with him,” Saravanan said, pointing out the BJP claim.
