Dubai: Records fell in the 12th edition of Fazza Championship for Freediving organised by Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center (HHC) and featuring world and regional champions at the Hamdan Sports Complex on Saturday.

Croatian freediver and now six-time Fazza champion Goran Colak defended his title in the Open Category with a new record of 11min 6.14sec, beating his time of 10min 19sec set last year and wiping the previous record set at Fazza championship by Branko Petrovic of Serbia at 10min 30sec.

Oman’s Ibrahim Bin Abdullah Al Sulaitni won the first place in the UAE/GCC category with a new record time of 6min 16.49secs while 11-year old Emirati Suhail Hashim Al Marzouqi took home first place and made a new record in the Emirati Juniors division after holding his breath underwater for 2min 50.84sec.

“This year’s edition of Fazza Championship for Freediving has proven to be really amazing, with new records being set and the level of competition getting stronger,” said Hamad Al Rahoomi, Head of Fazza Championship Freediving Committee.

“Just a couple of years ago, winners posted single-digit minutes (9min and below) but now, double-digit minutes (10min and above) have become the standard for champions. Records are being set every year. This reflects that the level of competition has become tougher as we see elite champions from all over the world coming to Dubai every year to compete in this prestigious and one-of-its-kind championship,” Rahoomi added.
