DUBAI: Two men suspected to have broken into a vehicle and disappeared with Dhs216,641 worth of mobile phones landed at the Dubai Criminal Court on Wednesday.

The Asian salesman, 24, and compatriot postman, 25, allegedly smashed the quarter glass of a general trading company vehicle that was parked inside a parking lot in Al Rifa’a area at night on April 3, 2016.

They allegedly used a screw driver to smash the glass on the right side of the vehicle and open its door. They removed cartons containing 368 mobiles. Both refuted the allegations during court questioning.

They contended they were jailed since three years over a similar robbery. When they completed the jail term, crime investigators falsely attributed this case to them. The court set Sept. 23 for its decision.

An Emirati warrant officer said the victim told police he parked the vehicle at around 10pm on April 3 and returned at around 3pm the next day only to find burglars had smashed its window and stole the phones.

A source alerted cops the salesman was implicated. Upon arrest, he said it was the postman who masterminded and committed the robbery and his role was to transport the postman to the scene in a getaway car.

The mastermind entrusted him with keeping the loot at his apartment in Port Saeed area. Police seized a carton of 97 mobiles. The postman was arrested at the Dubai airport returning from abroad. He confessed but argued that the salesman was the mastermind.
