SHARJAH: Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and wife of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has urged voters to be prudent in choosing the candidates for next month’s Federal National Council (FNC) elections.

“It is incumbent upon you to know the candidate you’re voting for and make an informed choice. You should choose the most suitable candidate who will contribute the most to national development.

“You cannot claim you didn’t know the candidate you voted for. You are responsible for your choices, and the result of the election shall reflect the steps you took to pave the way for greater improvement of the nation.”

The advice of Sheikha Jawaher was enumerated in the message spoken on her behalf before the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the National Election Committee, Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, at the Sharjah Ladies Club on Sept.10.

Gargash, the Minister of State for FNC Affairs, delivered a lecture on the FNC elections. The Chairperson of Sharjah’s investment arm, Shurooq, Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, was also in attendance.

A few female candidates were among the almost entirely female-only audience that packed the hall.

Gargash spoke about the Emirati martyrs in Yemen and “how it has been a hard period on the UAE because the spirit of the nation is not only known during happiness, it’s also known during sadness.”

He added, “The martyrs’ families are patient believers, accepting what Allah decrees for our nation which is precious, noble, and expansive.

“We have started the elections programme with a small group because we were planning on expanding it later on, as the electoral culture is still new in the UAE.”

He mentioned the women’s empowerment issue is considered as one of the greatest successes of the UAE, saying: “Emiratis now accept and believe in the Emirati women’s role in various fields, after the efforts undertaken by Sheikha Fatima and Sheikha Jawaher.

“Women are expected to turn out for the election, as there are around 120 out of every 242 citizens who are women, which means half of them will vote with 120 feminine votes.” Gargash added, “Twenty per cent of the candidates are women this year.”

Gargash pointed out that encouraging youths to participate in this election is important. Even if they don’t win a seat in the national council this year, they may win in four years’ time. It will be enough that they took public affairs to heart.

He also alluded to there being some technical aspects of the election, such as the early elections to be held at the end of September, adding: “Voting will be available for Emiratis living abroad in 90 embassies.”
