SHARJAH: The Philippine Embassy in Baghdad is in constant communication with the 3,000 Filipinos in Arbil via social media and through the diplomatic mission team deployed to the northern Iraqi city even before the referendum.

Charge d’Affaires Elmer Cato through a Facebook chat on Sunday also told The Gulf Today: “We are coordinating with Iraqi authorities on the transit of Filipinos who need to travel to and from Kurdistan as a result of the suspension of international flights to and from local airports.

“We have urged them to remain calm but to be vigilant while we monitor developments in Kurdistan.

“We urged them not to listen to rumours and also not to spread these to avoid unnecessary panic.”

A total of 4,000 Filipinos are in Iraq and with the 3,000 in Arbil, which is the capital of what is known as Southern Kurdistan Region, are engineers, nurses, hotel and restaurant employees, administrative assistants and household domestic workers, according to Cato.

This reporter got in touch with the Philippine official since Baghdad said it would halt international flights to Arbil this week as a majority of the local citizens, or the Kurds, overwhelmingly chose independence in the referendum conducted recently.
