THE massive fire that had broken out on Sunday evening at around 7.55pm has completely gutted five warehouses and a plastic factory, according to a senior civil defence official.
While the financial loss could be worth millions, no casualties or injuries were reported, the official affirmed.
Colonel Wahid Al Serkal, director of Sharjah Civil Defence, said that the fire had first broken out at a plastic factory and then spread to three warehouses of Al Safeer group, which had various items stored including contained food and other products. The fire had spread rapidly and had extended to two other warehouses in the area, he noted.
During a press conference held to disclose details about the accident, Colonel Al Serkal told reporters that the warehouses were located in Industrial Area 1. He added that it took around five hours to completely control the blaze, while Sharjah Sky was filled with heavy smoke.
“Once notified about the accident, we immediately rushed to the fire site and with the support of the municipality and other civil defence teams from other emirates, the fire was controlled in a short time,” the official stated.
“The whole area was completely covered in black smoke and Anjad traffic patrols cordoned the area to prevent curious onlookers from getting injured, and in order to assist the fire fighters in immediate access to the fire site,” he said.
“The police are currently investigating the main cause of the fire,” he added.
Colonel Al Serkal also pointed out that as soon as the fire had erupted, the electricity and gas connections had been immediately disconnected from the Industrial Area 1 and were reconnected after completing the extinguishing process.
