DUBAI: Dubai’s first EPIC sustainable living expo kicked off on Wednesday for eco-wise and savvy consumers who got a firsthand look at environment-friendly products and sustainable initiatives from over 70 local and international producers.

Addressing the general public and specifically the eco-conscious consumers, the Epic expo will run at the mall until Friday, organisers said. Epic stands for ‘Eco-Wise, Progressive and Intelligent Consumer’.

The eco-expo offers an opportunity for its visitors to pursue a ‘green’ lifestyle by interacting with eco-friendly entrepreneurs, and in turn contributing to the global efforts aimed at combating climate change and conserving the environment.

Marking the first day of Dubai Summer Surprises 2011, Epic Dubai opened on a positive note at The Dubai Mall, where a Green Cars Caravan of solar, electric, hybrid and biodiesel powered cars has been staged.

The green cars caravan, organised by Dubai Police and SS Lootah Group, took off from Burj Al Arab with a pit stop at Dubai Police Academy before it continued its journey to Burj Khalifa Boulevard and The Dubai Mall- the expo destination.

UAE’s first solar powered car, designed and manufactured at the Lootah Technical Centre and unveiled by UNEP Champion of the Earth, Louis Palmer, during World Environment Day Dubai celebration earlier this month, cruised down Sheikh Zayed Road as part of the green cars caravan.

Yousif Saeed Lootah, Board Member of SS Lootah Group and CEO of Lootah Biofuels, said this initiative would further reinforce the UAE’s efforts in overcoming environmental challenges by introducing practical and effective solutions.

Colonel Nasser Abdulwahed Al-Awar, director of community relations at Dubai Police, kicked off Epic Talks highlighting Dubai Police’s efforts in the field of saving energy. Biodiesel and electric vehicles of Dubai Police have taken part in the green cars caravan.

“Today was a true celebration of earth-friendly living and sustainability in the UAE,” remarked Tracy Fast, Epic Dubai Show Manager. “Expressing genuine interest in changing lifestyle will only help attain more sustainable and eco-friendly development.”

“The show makes informed choices and buying products and services to support responsible businesses that are making an effort. UAE residents have to realise the importance of consuming responsibly, for which Epic presents an ideal platform,” she added.

According to her, the expo showcases a variety of items to satisfy all tastes and interests of people from different walks of life. “It covers fashion and accessories, food and beverage, leisure and travel, home and garden, health and beauty, business and technology, transportation and government.”

The initiative also includes Epic Talks delivered by inspiring leaders to entertain and engage, Epic Sights that offer visually enticing experiences of human ingenuity in tackling climate change, Epic sounds that bring local and international musical acts to an ecologically aware platform and Epic Eco-Fashion Shows that put a sustainable and fashionable foot forward down the Dubai Mall catwalk.
