DUBAI: Ali Anwar blazed his way to an unbeaten 121 on a belter of a pitch at the Sevens ground in Dubai on Saturday but all his efforts came to naught after Mideast Metals failed to overhaul Gems Education’s total of 255 in the final of the DCC Ramadan League.

Mideast won the toss but invited Gems to have a first look at the wicket. With opening batsman Shuja Haider in the form of his life Gems were only too happy to take first strike. Haider who was later declared the best batsman of the tournament gave Gems just the start they expected. He did the bulk of the scoring during his 39-run first wicket partnership with Amir Wahab (9).

Later he was joined by Ali Tipu Sultan and together they stitched 79 runs for the second wicket.

Haider went on to score 85 from 41 balls and his knock was peppered with three sixes and 10 fours. Tipu Sultan missed his half-century by three runs but his power packed knock came off only 21 balls and had two sixes and eight fours.

Midway through the innings Gems began to lose their way but Amin Rasool and Ahmed Zaman got a grip of it. Rasool struck 40 from 26 balls (3x6, 2x6) and Zaman played a cameo of 36 from 19 balls (2x6, 3x4) to guide their team to a formidable 255 for 9 in 25 overs.

Mohammed Farooq (3-32), Mubeen Ali (2-30) and Sanchit Sharma (2-30) were the wicket takers for Mideast.

In reply, Yasir Siraj and Khurram Khawaja began positively by putting on 58 runs for the first wicket but Zafar Raja got two quick wickets that of Khawaja (13) and Mohammed Farooq (2) to put Mideast on the back foot.

Then man of the match Ali Tipu Sultan got rid of Irfan Ashraf (2) and Yasir Siraj (36) and Mideast were soon tottering on 63 for 4.
