DUBAI: A superb bowling spell from Asif Khan helped Wings Group beat Farooq CC supported by DU by six wickets in a Group D match on Sunday in the ongoing Dubai Cricket Council‘s Ramadan Cricket tournament being played at the Dubai Men’s College Fair Grounds Oval.
Khan picked up four wickets for 20 runs from his four overs, out of which two were maiden overs, and helped bowl out Farooq CC, who chose to bat first after winning the toss, for just 90 runs in 20.3 overs.
A timely 38-run eighth-wicket partnership between Asif Nadeem and Salman Farooq added some sort of respectability to the innings.
Nadeem hit a 14-ball 26 with the help of three sixes, while Farooq chipped in with a useful 15 from 18 balls.
Zahoor Farooqi gave the early breakthroughs, picking up two wickets for just eight runs from his three overs and gave good support to Khan.
Abdul Haq, Waseem, Sajjad Ali and Adnan Mohammad picked up one wicket apiece.
While chasing a low score of 91 for victory, Wings lost four wickets before reaching their target in 19.3 overs.
Wings lost both their openers — Ashfaq Ahmad and skipper Neeraj Ramamoorthy — cheaply and the team were reeling at three for 18 at one stage.
But Shaiman Anwar rescued his team with an aggressive knock and smashed four boundaries and one six in his unbeaten 42 off 36 deliveries and powered Wings to a six-wicket victory.
He added an unbeaten 51 runs for the fourth wicket with wicket-keeper Ishtiaq Ghouri, who was not out on 28 with the help of three hits to the fence.
Mohammad Shafqat was the pick of the bowlers, bagging two wickets for 17 from his four overs, while Ahmad Shaukat took one for 20 from five.
The 25-over tourney, being conducted under the auspices of Dubai Cricket Council, has 16 top teams vying for the title.
