South Indian movie stars honoured in run-up to awards ceremony

DUBAI: Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has been declared as the Best Actor for his performances in the movies Spirit and Run Baby Run, as the 6th edition of Asiavision Movie Awards 2012 were announced in Dubai on Sunday.

The heartthrob of Malayalam movies Rima Kallingal won the Best Actress award for her sensitive portrayal of Tessa in 22 Female Kotttayam and Ashwathi in Nidra.    

Hindi film actor Juhi Chawla won the award for Excellence in Hindi for her understated performance as Mekha in the movie I am, and the director of the same movie Onir was elected as the winner in the category of Excellence in Hindi-Creative.

Leading lady of South Indian cinema Shruti Haasan (actor, singer, music composer), has been selected for the award in the category of Excellence in Tamil and that was for the movie Moonu.

Fahadh Faasil, who enthralled the audience with his subtle performances in the movies Diamond Necklace and 22 Female Kottayam, was selected as Performer of the Year.

Director Lal Jose’s Diamond Necklace bagged the Best Movie Award while Ranjith was  declared the Best Director for the movie Spirit. Jayasurya was selected as the Second Best Actor (Beautiful, Trivandrum Lodge) and Revathy was the Second Best Actress for the movie Molly Aunty Rocks. The selection of winners was done through a net-based public voting campaign, Director of AsiaVision Nissar Syed said at a press conference held at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Deira on Sunday.

The names of the winners were announced by representatives of sponsors who were present at the venue.   

In other categories, Murali Gopi won the award for Best Anti-Hero award whereas Manoj K Jayan was selected as the Best Supporting Actor for the movie Vellaripravinte Changathi and Mallu Singh.

Anusri is the Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the movie Diamond Necklace. The Best Comedian award went to Aju Varghese (Thattathin Marayathu). Anoop Menon was elected as the Trendsetter of the Year for his refreshing screenplay and introducing an entirely different treatment in storytelling for the movie Beautiful. Nivin Pauli and Isha Talwar are winners of the New Sensation in Acting Awards.

The unique honour of Man of the Year went to the young director-actor-singer Vineeth Sreenivasan, Nissar Syed said.

Best Character Actor Award went to Mamukoya for the movies Molly Aunty Rocks and Vellaripravintae Changathi.    

Altogether there are 45 awards in different categories which will be distributed along with cash awards at a function to be held at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Nov.9.
