DUBAI: A jailor teamed up with four accomplices to rob a salesman who was eager to have his Dhs272, 500 doubled, the Dubai Criminal Court heard on Tuesday.

The Arab lieutenant, 41, with the help of two Arabs – a investor, 43, and an accountant, 42, and two Africans – a salesman, 34, and a visitor, 47 – robbed the Pakistani victim, 25, who had showed up get the money doubled.

As per an agreed upon robbery plan, the salesman and visitor were meeting the victim inside his friend’s car on April 8 when the jailor arrived with the investor and accountant. The jailor flashed a military ID.

Prosecutors referred the five defendants to the court and charged them with robbery.

They additionally charged the Arab trio of impersonating CID officers and the African duo of abetting the impersonation.

They all denied the charges. The lawyers of the jailor and the investor asked for time to review the case files. The other defendants asked the court to find them lawyers. The case was adjourned till Oct.9.

In prosecution records, the victim and his workmate claimed that an acquaintance showed up at their shop in Muhaisna and said there was an African man who wanted to exchange $150,000 for dirhams.

The acquaintance requested the victim to assist the African who was allegedly new to the country.  The acquaintance told him the African wanted Dhs272,000 in exchange, of which he will bag a 5 per cent share.

The victim borrowed the dirhams from friends. He and his workmate went to meet the African visitor at a parking lot in Al Baraha. During another meeting in Hamriyah the visitor contacted the salesman to come.

Both claimed dollars were ready and asked the victim to first give them the dirhams. He refused and placed his bag under the car seat. They started disputing with him. The jailor and the accountant showed up.

The jailor ordered both Africans to head to his vehicle and claimed that both were wanted. He ordered the victim and his workmate to step out. The accountant combed the car and landed on the bag.

The jailor ordered the victim and his workmate to go for evening prayers. They hesitated. He angrily told them ‘police procedures’ would take long. They went and returned only to find no one was around.

An Emirati captain explained that he noticed the victim altered his statements. “He had initially told me he met both Africans on the issue of purchasing a shop in Naif area. I investigated the matter thoroughly.

“I again questioned him, his friends and the jailor. I discovered he had come to have the money doubled. The Africans posed as money-doublers and the Arabs conducted the bogus arrest.” The jailor distributed the loot.
