Waha Capital to invest Dhs184m in LatAm online travel company

Waha Capital, a leading investment company in Abu Dhabi, has announced an investment of Dhs184 million ($50 million) in Despegar.com, a leading NYSE-listed company in the online travel sector.
An addition to its investment programme initiated in May comprising a total of up to $150 million in US-listed companies, the new investment supports Waha Capital’s growth strategy for its Private Investments portfolio.As part of the investment, Waha Capital will also appoint a representative to the company’s Board of Directors.
Waha Capital and Despegar.com entered into a private placement through which Waha Capital will invest in series B preferred shares convertible into ordinary shares for an aggregate purchase price of Dhs184 million ($50 million).

The investment in Despegar.com, which is listed on the NYSE, further diversifies Waha Capital’s investment portfolio into both a new sector and a new region. Despegar is well-positioned to benefit from an accelerating shift to online consumer purchases driven both by technology advancement as well as the accelerated adoption of e-commerce due to the impact of COVID-19.
Latin American online travel bookings are expected to accelerate in the coming years, once the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have subsided. Factors driving the growth in online travel bookings include the increase of internet penetration, further adoption of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices and a growing middle class with greater access to banking services and credit products, together enabling a larger segment of the population to transact online or on mobile devices. The company offers the broadest travel portfolio, with inventory from global suppliers, including over 270 airlines and over 690,000 hotels, as well as some 1,260 car rental agencies and approximately 200 destination services suppliers.
Waha Capital’s Private Investment business invests in a diverse range of sectors including technology, healthcare, energy, financial services, infrastructure and industrial real estate. The business continues to focus on identifying new investments, with a potential to realise long-term returns for Waha Capital shareholders.
Waha Capital has posted revenues of Dh571 million in the second quarter of 2020, an increase of 8.5 times over Q2 2019’s revenue of Dh60 million.
The company also announced a net profit, attributable to owners of the company, of Dh267.2 million compared to a net loss of Dh124.4 million in Q2 2019. Total impairments during the period were recorded at Dh10 million compared to Dh109.3 million previously in 2019.
Total general and admin expenses in the first half of 2020 were reduced by eight per cent year-on-year to Dh98.3 million. Waha Capital’s Asset Management business, which deploys emerging market funds, recorded a net profit of Dh300.1 million in Q2 2020, offsetting a mark-to-market loss in Q1 2020 of Dh297.2 million. By successfully navigating the economic volatility caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, a net overall profit of Dh2.9 million was achieved in the first half.
Despegar.com also announced recently that it entered into a private placement with an affiliate of L Catterton Latin America in which Despegar will issue and sell non-convertible preferred stock plus warrants to purchase ordinary shares for an aggregate purchase price of $150 million. The Company expects the investment to close in September 2020, subject to customary closing conditions. Despegar intends to use the proceeds from this investment for general corporate purposes, including potential acquisitions.
