Selena Gomez hints she may retire from music: ‘Why do I keep doing this?'

Selena Gomez has hinted she may retire from music as people “don’t necessarily take [her] seriously”.
Gomez has balanced acting and singing for most of her career, but has suggested in a new interview that she no longer gets satisfaction from pop stardom, because people struggle to separate her art from her public persona.
“It’s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously,” Gomez told Vogue Magazine. “I’ve had moments where I’ve been like, ‘What’s the point? Why do I keep doing this?’”
Gomez added that she was disappointed by the response from “some people” to her 2019 track “Lose You to Love Me”, which launched her third studio album Rare. She called it the “best song” she’s ever released, reports The Independent.
“I think there are a lot of people who enjoy my music, and for that I’m so thankful, for that I keep going, but I think the next time I do an album it’ll be different,” she explained. “I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire music.”
Asked to clarify what she meant by interviewer Jia Tolentino, Gomez said she needed “to be careful” with what she said, but added that she wants to spend more time producing and acting in her immediate future.
Gomez found fame on the Disney Channel series The Wizards of Waverly Place, before transitioning to music as the frontwoman for the pop band Selena Gomez and the Scene. In 2013, she released her first solo album. Her biggest singles include hits such as “Hands to Myself” and “Bad Liar”.
Since the release of Rare in early 2020, Gomez has largely pivoted to non-musical ventures.
She will star in the forthcoming comedy series Only Murders in the Building with Steve Martin and Martin Short, and recently signed on to play the world’s first gay woman to climb all of the Seven Summits in a film biopic.
Gomez also hosts a successful cooking series, Selena + Chef, for the US streaming service HBO Max.
