COYA Dubai, the Peruvian restaurant which offers immersive culinary experiences with larger Latin American influences, is showcasing the works of contemporary Belgian-Lebanese artist Celio Koko (mid-September till January). It features Koko’s signature fusion of abstract and figurative art; COYA Dubai aims to enrich the dining experience on its premises with the spirited artistic atmosphere conjured up by the artist. Born and raised in Belgium and now based in Dubai, Koko has exhibited his work in prominent galleries across the Middle East and London. Known for his neo-expressionist approach, he brings a noteworthy collection of artworks to COYA Dubai. His pieces, including “Pink Lolo,” “I Win,” “Koko Kolo,” and “Thank You Mama” adorn the venue, allowing guests to dine amidst pulsating artworks.
Koko’s work reflects his personal journey, with each piece capturing his mindset that determines positivity triumphs over adversity. Through bold brushstrokes, his energy is imprinted on the canvas, embodying both vulnerability and the strength that overcomes it. Koko’s artistic journey began after a near-death experience: it led him to find solace and self-realisation through art. His works are also deeply influenced by his time in Africa and his connection to tribal life. Therefore, the artworks reflect a tropical and tribal vibe. It somehow harmoniously complements the restaurant’s ambience.
COYA Dubai updates its art installations quarterly to showcase emerging artists; it is a way it fulfills its commitment to integrate art and the dining experience. Guests are invited to explore Koko’s thought-provoking art while enjoying COYA’s renowned Peruvian dishes. All art pieces are available for purchase. Koko’s featured works include “Pink Lolo” – 150x130cm, 2023, mixed media on canvas; “I Win” – 155x135cm, 2023, mixed media on canvas; “Koko Kolo” – 135x105cm, 2023, mixed media on canvas; and “Thank You Mama” – 160x250cm, 2024, mixed media on canvas. In its bio of the artist, Artsper.com notes that Koko’s work pays homage to the neo-expressionist movement with a marked presence of abstract figurative art. His career is the result of a never-ending journey of experimentation, Artsper says.
Born in Belgium in 1983, Koko moved to Africa and lived between Uganda, Tanzania and Congo for about eight years. During the time, he developed a lasting relationship with tribal life, animals and raw nature; it would influence his work in the future. Around age 28, and after a near-death experience, he was inspired to find his passion through art. At first, he viewed the creative process as an escape to a better reality. Later, he adopted it as a means of self-actualisation.
“Koko’s artistic identity is pure freedom of self-expression, rejecting all limits and refusing defined classification,” Artsper continues. “Using multiple media and techniques, and through extensive practice, he has managed to carve out a successful path in today’s art scene. Composing works that are both two-dimensional and three-dimensional, he plays with colours, shapes and compositions.”
Koko has participated in group and individual exhibitions, and has been represented by several prestigious galleries such as the Aout Gallery and the Belvedere Art Space. His works have been acquired by many art connoisseurs and are now part of prestigious private collections around the world. The numerous years in the studio has not faded his passion for art; his love of art making only grows further. “Artwork and decor,” says medium.com, “play a crucial role in enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal and atmosphere of restaurant interiors. These elements contribute to creating a visual narrative that complements the restaurant’s theme, enhances the dining experience, and leaves a lasting impression on customers.”
