Coronavirus times – Empty streets, closed doors: 24 hours around the world in pictures

Over a 24-hour period, a third of world population is now under orders to stay home.

More than three billion people have been asked to stay at home in almost 70 countries and territories as governments battle the coronavirus pandemic.

From Paris to Santa Monica, Dhaka to Panama, life has shuddered to a halt in varying degrees, with the closure of restaurants and other non-essential businesses and school classes suspended, while gatherings are banned, transport is limited and beaches and parks now no-go zones.

Around one in five people around the globe are under lockdown, as the world enters a critical week in responding to the accelerating coronavirus pandemic.

Here are 25 photographs, taken from Monday to Tuesday, showing scenes playing out in countries around the globe, of deserted roads and city centres, people working at home, pupils being schooled online, lonely funerals and spontaneous concerts from balconies.

More than 21,305 have died due to the pandemic coronavirus and 472,762 people have been infected globally.
