Elderly Emirati lady restored her shoulder movement after eight years of disability at Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital

The story started about eight years ago when a 74-year-old Emirati lady woke up with a complaint of pain in her right shoulder that worsened overtime till she was not able to raise or use her right hand and she became totally dependent on her family for all daily activities and she was not able to hold a cup of water with her right hand. She has a complicated medical history including renal failure undergoing dialysis, cardiac problems, bleeding tendency, osteoporosis, diabetes and hypertension and she took several treatments for many years.
She was diagnosed with a massive tear in her rotator cuff tendon and she was advised by many surgeons inside and outside UAE to do physiotherapy only then some gave her injections in her shoulder and later after failure of all conservative treatment, some doctors advised her to do a complete shoulder replacement surgery to treat her severe painful condition but all of them were not able to proceed with the surgery because of her complex medical condition.
A month ago, the patient was presented to Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital at Dubai Healthcare City and she was seen by Dr. Ahmed Samy, Consultant Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Surgeon.
The patient was crying because of her right shoulder and hand pain and she told Dr. Samy that she always woke up at night over the last five years because of the pain in her right shoulder and hand and asked him for any solution to her problem rather than a major shoulder replacement surgery.
Dr.Ahmed Samy decided to do a keyhole arthroscopic surgery for her right shoulder using the latest materials and technology for tendons grafting and transfer for a complete capsular reconstruction to her right shoulder. The surgery was done successfully on the last week of November 2020. On the next day of her surgery, her shoulder pain was reduced from 10 to 2 without any swelling or bleeding in her right shoulder. Two weeks later, there was no pain and she started gradually with the help of our physiotherapy team at Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib to use her right hand.
Six weeks later after the surgery, the patient started using her right upper limb for all her daily activities like eating, brushing her teeth and wearing her clothes by herself without any assistance.
