According to a report in a section of the Indian media, Harris, who has made history as the nation's first Black and South Asian Vice President, wearing the Indian dress could send a key message about how the Biden-Harris administration seeks to present minorities.
Kamala Harris has already set a trend, not only in the field of women empowerment, but also by appearing on the cover of the fashion glossy Vogue.
Speculation around what Harris could wear on her inauguration had been rife before the Democrats won the elections. In 2019, at an event hosted by an Asian-American group, an audience member asked Harris if she would wear a traditional Indian garment if she were elected president.
"Let's first win," she had responded, smiling. "My mother raised us with a very strong appreciation for our cultural background and pride. Celebrations that we all participate in regardless of how our last name is spelled. It's the beauty of who we are as a nation."
Harris' mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was born in Chennai, India.
"I wouldn't be surprised if we see her show up to the inauguration ball in a beautifully woven Banarasi sari," fashion designer Bibhu Mohapatra told CNN, according to the report.
"Madam VP@SenKamalaHarris I am standing by. It will be an honour to dress you," the New York-based fashion designer, who was born in Odisha, wrote on Twitter.
