Social media king Khaby Lame topped the list of the most-followed content creators on TikTok with over 144.4 million followers.
Khaby has surpassed TikTok star Charli D’Amelio, who has 142.8 million followers. Khaby managed to become an internet celebrity, mainly famous for broadcasting silent clips mocking videos spread on social media, garnering millions of views.
The 22-year-old Italian, of Senegalese origin, influencer, whose real name is Khabane Lame, joined the platform in March 2020 after losing his job, according to The New York Times.
He quickly gained popularity on the app with his mute but amusing responses to other videos on the app, often showing him reacting to difficult "life hacks."
Most of Lame's videos rack up millions of views, with his most popular TikTok video have over 300 million views.
In his account bio, Lame informs his followers in English and Italian that if they want a laugh, they've "come to the right place."
Khaby met many celebrities and international stars who supported him and participated in his videos.
In addition to Lame’s popularity on the app, the content creator has also found fame outside the sphere of social media, as he recently teamed up with Boss to create a limited-edition capsule collection for Spring/Summer 2022, after attending a fashion show for the brand.
Lame's popularity on the app has also translated into a monetary gain, as Celebrity Net Worth estimates the influencer to have a net worth of $5 million.
In addition to being the most followed creator on the platform, D'Amelio has also been highest paid in 2021, with Forbes reporting earning $17.5 million last year.
Both Khaby and D’Amelio have not publicly acknowledged the recent shift in the ranking of most-followed TikTok accounts.
