Young visitors to the Sharjah Children's Reading Festival (SCRF 2024) on Saturday explored the world of yoga through storytelling. They learned breathing exercises that provide emotional empowerment and positive affirmations to keep them energised and motivated during an interactive session titled 'Reading Happy Yogis,' led by Mexican author Sandy Zanella, who is also a medical doctor and seasoned yoga instructor.
During the session, children aged 3-12 tried yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditation, all woven into the narrative of 'Happy Yogis.' These activities are intended not just to calm and relax but also to energise, making them perfect for morning routines before school. The author’s storytelling also incorporated powerful positive affirmations to boost confidence and nurture a growth mindset among the young participants.
'Today's session is not just about reading and physical activity; it's about equipping children with tools to navigate life's challenges,' emphasised Zanella. 'By integrating yoga and mindfulness, we're fostering a generation that is both physically and emotionally resilient, inspiring hope for a brighter future.'
She noted that teaching children at a young age resonates and becomes a way of life. "The younger they are, the more they learn and integrate into their lives as they grow up and face challenges. Having this mindset will help them overcome these challenges and succeed in their endeavour."
The 12-day festival, now in its 15th edition, offers more than just a celebration of the written word. With over 1,500 activities, it reflects the festival’s commitment to holistic education in a unique setting that combines fun and education while surrounded by thousands of titles that inspire curiosity and a love of reading.
