Six countrymen battered and robbed a security guard inside his room. They will spend one year behind bars to be followed by deportation. The Asian defendants –two blacksmiths, a manager, two labourers and a carpenter (aged 23 to 32)- targeted the Indian watchman, 35, inside his room at a site under construction in Rashidiyah area on Jan.13.
They tied him up and assaulted him until he was unconscious. They decamped with his wallet containing Dhs500, an Emirates ID, two ATM cards, an Indian driving licence and Nokia mobile phone, he said.
In court they argued that the watchman defaulted on the first blacksmiths money. They took his cash and mobile phone in retaliation. They denied assaulting him. The Dubai Criminal Court found them guilty.
On the record, the watchman was said he was on duty when three of the gang members showed up and told him there was a problem at their workplace. They requested to spend the night in his room. He let them in.
Shortly, three others came with the same demand. He accepted. In the morning he told them to leave. He locked the door and went his way. He returned at night and found them there. They requested to spend another night in his room.
“At midnight one of them claimed that his wallet containing Dhs5, 000 was stolen. He asked me whether I saw it. I told him no. We returned to sleep. In the morning I went to another site. I returned and found them waiting.
“The moment I entered the room they stormed it, beat me and tied me. They continued beating me. I fell unconscious. I later woke up, untied myself, checked my belongings and discovered my wallet and its contents were taken.”
The construction site’s foreman came and contacted the police. The watchman was taken to hospital for treatment over the multiple bruises and contusions he sustained.
