6,000 saplings handed over to civic body

Students of Habitat Schools, UAE, handed over 6000 saplings of two varieties, Moringa Olifera (drumstick) and Sesbania Grandiflora (agathi) to Ajman Municipality under its “Seed-To-Plant” initiative on Thursday.

Ajman Municipality has supported the school’s initiative since its inception in November 2018. These saplings come from seeds that students and staff of the schools had planted in November 2018.

The Agriculture and Public Park officials from Ajman Municipality Maryam Ganim and Dr. Ali Hamad received the saplings from a group of students from various Habitat Schools in a simple handover ceremony held at Habitat School Al Jurf Ajman football ground. They were all praised for the great effort that had involved all school students and staff and spoke about giving continued support to Habitat Schools and its various initiatives in the future as well.

This handing over of saplings was held in quick succession to Habitat Schools having achieved a new Guinness World Records title for the “Largest distribution of Saplings,” at one venue on April 30.

Ajman Municipality has offered wonderful and gracious support to this programme throughout its duration and we are sure this initiative has been successful in raising environmental awareness among the community.

After handing of the saplings to Ajman Municipality, around 2000 saplings of these outdoor varieties of plants will be still available with Habitat Schools. In the spirit of spreading this care, if any member of the general public desires to receive some of these saplings, he/she may get back at [email protected] with an initial request. Interested persons will have to fill out a Letter of Care and submit it to receive saplings. Sapling varieties are such that they need an outdoor space to plant.

Rizli Ahmedali, Executive Secretary of the Habitat Schools, said that this project was started in the Year of Zayed, for honouring the ecological sensitivity of the Founding Father of the UAE. The group of schools completed the second phase of distribution. Now they are moving into the third phase of sapling handover in the Year of Tolerance.

He said, “The support of Ajman Municipality was critical to this initiative as every planted sapling is a life and we had to ensure continuous support for the saplings after the distribution event had taken place. This wonderful kindness and support was what made us take this project ahead.”
