Briton lands behind bars for headbutting policeman

A Briton who headbutted a corporal and punched another during a standoff in Jumeirah lost an appeal against his three-month prison term on Sunday.

The 26-year-old visitor consumed alcohol before going berserk in front of a hotel in Jumeirah Beach Residence area at around 3am on May 3 last year, records at Al Barsha Police Station showed.

Police dispatched the Emirati corporal, 23, and his compatriot colleague to the scene to contain the situation. He refused to cooperate, attacked them and headbutted the corporal on the face.

Before police and prosecutors, he argued that he could not recall what happened since he was drunk then. The Criminal Court caged him for three months plus deportation. He lost the mercy plea.

On the record, the corporal narrated that he and his colleague were on patrol in Al Barsha when the police operations room alerted them about a rowdy inebriated man in front of the hotel.

“We rushed to the scene and found the defendant abnormal. He smelled of alcohol. We shackled him and took him to the police station,” the corporal explained during prosecution investigations.

“We were getting him out of the patrol vehicle when he suddenly headbutted my nose and slapped my colleague’s head.” Both pinned him down but ended up in hospital over injuries they sustained.

Separately, a drug abuser who resisted arrest and threw kicks at policemen failed to convince the Appeals Court to rescind his five-year-jail term, deportation and Dhs20,000 fine penalty on Sunday.

The Asian employee, 26, consumed hashish. He was caught with a plastic roll containing 1.40g of hashish. He engaged antinarcotics department cops in a scuffle, Bur Dubai Police Station records showed.

An Emirati lieutenant said, “We seized the roll in his mobile phone’s cover. He resisted fiercely trying to escape.” He was throwing kicks when “he kicked his bed and got injured. We took him to the department.”
