The Fujairah Criminal Court on Wednesday heard a case in which a Gulf citizen in his forties was charged for abusing drugs and psychotropic substances. The accused was caught during a police car search when the inspection personnel noticed that he was losing balance while sitting next to the driver.
The accused was transferred to the Anti-narcotics Department where a criminal report was opened against him. The public prosecution ordered that he be referred to the courts of law on charges of abusing psychotropic substances.
The defense lawyer confirmed that the defendant had been suffering from psychological disorders for years and he was treating these disorders as evidenced by a report issued by Al Amal Medical Centre. The lawyer requested the court to release the accused but the court set a date for a subsequent session for a verdict.
TEN CRIMES
The Abu Dhabi appellate court on Wednesday adjourned to Sept 11 the case of an Arab charged with 10 acts of crime including using someone else’s driving licence, driving under the influence of alcohol, endangering the lives of others, and claiming to be an employee of a company.
The suspect told the court that the vehicle used in committing the violations was not registered in his name. He also denied all traffic charges and the use of narcotic, claiming that he takes prescribed medicine containing narcotics. The suspect demanded the court to release him on bail adding that he was held in custody for four months and that there are no verdicts against him.
The suspect’s lawyer requested the court to summon the witness, a policeman, for a hearing and also requested a report on the examination of the therapeutic substance used by the suspect so that the court could make sure that the treatment he took upon a prescription contains narcotic substances. The court has decided to summon the witness and released the suspect and put him under electronic monitoring.
