Emirati mother rescues baby, sister from fire

An Emirati mother managed to rescue her newborn baby and sister from a fire that broke out inside her house in Hili District in Al Ain, thanks to her courage and presence of mind.

According to the official documents, a report was received by the operations room that a fire erupted in the house of an Emirati man.

Civil defence and police vehicles rushed to the scene of the fire and managed to put out the fire and prevent the flames from spreading to the other parts of the house.

As soon as she realised that the ground floor of the house was on fire, the mother went with her newborn baby and sister to the balcony to avoid suffocating and closed the door until the civil defence vehicles came a few minutes later.

The fire was caused by a malfunction of an air-conditioning unit in a ground floor room, Brigadier General Mohammed Mayouf Al Ketbi, Director General of the General Directorate of Civil Defence in Abu Dhabi, said.

The mother as well as her baby and sister were admitted to the nearest hospital for medical treatment and investigations are still on to know how the fire broke out, he added.

Brigadier Mohammed Saeed Al Neyadi, Director of Al Ain Civil Defence Department, called on the public to constantly check the validity of the electrical wires and devices for their safety.

He pointed out that the high temperature during this period of the year causes many accidents, stressing the need to install smoke detectors to avoid fires and save lives.

Seperately, a diesel-laden truck caught fire on Saturday afternoon after overturning on Yabsa Road between Sheikh Maktoum Street and Fujairah Port. No one was injured in the accident.

The Traffic and Patrols Department at the Fujairah Police closed the street in both directions.

In its statement, the Fujairah Civil Defence Department said its firefighting teams managed to bring under control a fire that broke out in a diesel-laden truck on Yabsa Road near Sakamkam by midday on Saturday.

The truck overturned on its way from Fujairah Port towards Al Maktoum Street and was fully engulfed in flames with heavy smoke filling the air.

The Traffic and Patrols Department said it closed the street because it was impossible for traffic to use the street due to the truck accident.

The department did not set a date for re-opening the street.
