Elderly man drowns in swimming pool of hotel

The Sharjah Public Prosecution has referred a lifeguard, 29, to the Sharjah Misdemeanour Court, over unintentionally causing the death of a 65-year-old Asian man.
As a result of the lifeguard’s negligence, the Asian old man drowned in the swimming pool of a hotel, during his absence from the pool area for breakfast.
The Buhairah Police Station was alerted by Al Qasimi Hospital Police to the case of a 65-year-old Asian man who drowned in a swimming pool of a hotel located in the Al Majaz area of Sharjah. He was taken to the hospital by national ambulance and admitted to the intensive care unit. Immediately, an investigation team moved to the hospital, where they questioned the deceased’s wife about the incident. The police office of Al Qasimi Hospital was informed of the death of the man, about six hours after his arrival at the hospital.
According to investigations carried out by the Public Prosecution, the defendant confirmed that he was not present at the scene of the incident, two weeks ago.
The defendant stated that he went to have breakfast at the hotel’s cafeteria. Five minutes later, he received a call from his colleague indicating that one person had drowned in the swimming pool. He rushed to the scene and saw the security guard with the victim after he managed to recover him. He then tried to revive him, but to no avail. The national ambulance arrived at the site, and medics managed to make the victim recover, and immediately transferred him to Al Qasimi Hospital.
The defendant pleaded guilty to negligence, especially since he had a lifeguard’s licence and should not have left the swimming pool area during work hours to avoid such cases. However, the lack of time and the inability to have breakfast prompted him to leave his position.
Recently, Dev, an 11-year-old Asian boy, died from drowning in a swimming pool of a residential tower in Al Nahda Area in Sharjah. The boy was taking swimming lessons in the same tower block in which he lived with his family.
