Visitors to The Flag Island, the picturesque outdoor destination in Sharjah, will be able to incorporate physical fitness into their routines at Callisthenics Park that will open within its premises in mid-October.
As part of this, The Flag Island will be installing outdoor fitness equipment for adults and children (who will have to be supervised by adults). This new attraction will be added to their current roller-skating sessions for children and the women’s run sessions activities.
Six types of equipment will be available at the Callisthenics Park, which visitors can use free of charge. They include:
Rope Climb Tower: An equipment for adults and kids to practise climbing ropes, an activity that will increase their upper body and core strength. It will also help children and adults get over their fear of heights.
Monkey and Straight Bars: This includes monkey bars, pull-up bars and curved bars to train grip strength. This equipment is ideal for practising callisthenics, and for TRX training also known as (Total Resistance Exercises).
Stall Bars and Kids’ Bars: Stall bars or ladder bars offer several options for training core and upper body strength.
Parallel Bars: These are used for training dips, swings, holds and other callisthenic workouts. Parallel bars are ideal for developing strength in the chest and triceps.
Pull-up/Sit-up Bars: This equipment is ideal for those who are still developing the skill strength for push-ups and sit-ups. It will allow them to work the correct muscles using the proper technique in a scaled-down movement.
Balance Beams: The equipment to use for developing balancing skills in both adults and children. It includes up-down and zig-zag beams for different sets of challenges.
Importantly, children will have to be supervised by an accompanying adult in all the activities at Callisthenics Park, as it is allowed only for children aged 8 and above.
Roller-skating: Children between 2 - 15 years of age can continue to rollerskate their way to health at the The Flag Island’s parking lots, between 6pm and 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The roller-skating lessons, delivered by the Rock Sports Centre – specialists in roller skating training – are aimed at teaching children new skills and enhancing their physical and mental abilities in a fun and safe environment.
An 8-session package is offered as well until April 2020. Pre-registration for the classes is required, and children who take the lessons will be awarded with participation certificates.
Women’s Run Session: This popular, walk-in activity continues at The Flag Island with girls and women of all ages joining fitness sessions featuring walking, jogging and running every Tuesday, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.
Women’s Run is organised by The Flag Island in collaboration with Sharjah Triathlon and Fitness First.
Khuloud Salim Al Junaibi, General Manager of The Flag Island, said: “There are specialised as well as general activities for children, families, individuals at TFI and we invite all members of the community to take advantage of the many opportunities available. It is in line with our vision to encourage all members of the community to get involved in a physical activity of their choice to improve their health while having some fun outdoors.”
