Children and adults alike can now explore a world of knowledge on the sands of reading — in Khor Fakkan, thanks to the Sharjah Beach Library initiative. Beachgoers can get a load of boat displays loaded with books and decorated with the UAE flag and Sharjah World Book Capital 2019 logo.
A series of cultural and literary events has marked the launch of the fourth phase of the Sharjah Beach Library initiative in Khor Fakkan — part of the yearlong celebrations of Sharjah’s Unesco World Book Capital 2019 title.
Organised by the Sharjah World Book Capital Office (SWBC Office) in cooperation with Knowledge without Borders (KwB), the launch of the fourth phase sought to lure those visiting the pristine beaches of Khor Fakkan into the fascinating world of the written word.
The launch event included book readings and other cultural activities, shows performed in cooperation with Sharjah International Marine Sports Club. Khor Fakkan beachgoers and families will now enjoy a series of scheduled entertainment and cultural events until April next year.
The Sharjah Beach Library initiative seeks to nurture a culture of reading and raise community awareness about its importance.
Mariam Al Hammadi, Director of KwB, said: “The library at Khor Fakkan offers many books covering a variety of topics and caters for different age groups and interests. We want this project to be remembered by Sharjah’s residents and visitors as one that not only gives them an insight into the cultural vision of the emirate but also broadens their horizons and expands knowledge through reading.”
Following the inauguration of the first phase at Al Khan beach in August this year, the second and third phases were launched at Al Khan 2 and Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC), respectively.
Unesco named Sharjah as the World Book Capital 2019 in appreciation of its vital role in supporting books and promoting reading. The yearlong celebrations programme was launched on 23 April this year.
