Driver responsible for Emirati brothers’ death

An Asian driver, 38, working as a security guard in an emirate, caused the vehicle of an Emirati family to swerve and overturn and as a result two Emirati brothers, 23 and 11, were dead and 4 ladies of the family were seriously injured on Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road, said Major General Ali Abdullah Bin Alwan, Commander-in-Chief of Ras Al Khaimah Police.

Immediately after the accident took place, specialised traffic work and investigation teams were formed whose efforts culminated in the arrest of the Asian driver in co-operation and co-ordination with Dubai Police and Umm Al Quwain Police, Bin Alwan added. Investigations into the accident showed that the Asian driver used the brakes suddenly and with a lot of force while driving his vehicle in front of the Emirati family’s vehicle, which was being driven by one of the injured women, Brigadier Ahmed Al Sam, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department, said. This caused the Emirati driver to be confused and her vehicle to swerve and overturn, while the Asian driver ran away, he added.

Al Sam pointed out that the file of the case was referred to the public prosecution for further legal procedures against the Asian driver.

Earlier, the General Directorate of Ras Al Khaimah Police arrested a young driver who committed 1,251 traffic violations in two years, with a total value of Dhs1,158,000, setting a record in traffic fines.

Colonel Waleed Mohammed Juma, head of Al Mamoura Comprehensive Police Station, said the 23-year-old driver was a UAE national whose vehicle was seized during the “Tawajodi” Traffic campaign.

He added, “When we checked the vehicle data in the federal traffic system, it turned out that the driver committed 1,200 overspeeding violations and 51 violations under ‘Wanted for impoundment,’ with a total value of Dhs1,158,000.” Juma explained that the value was the largest recorded on one driver in Ras Al Khaimah during this period, pointing out that the radars on the roads of RAK spotted the vehicle on different roads, exceeding the speed limits on those roads.

Major Mohammed Jaber Al Nuaimi, Director of Traffic and Patrol Branch at Al Mamoura Comprehensive Police Station, said “Tawajodi” continuous campaign team seized the violating vehicle and monitored the total value of the violations recorded against it.

Al Nuaimi called on drivers to be cautious while driving and to comply with the decided speed limits and regulations and traffic laws for the safety and security of both drivers and road users.

Colonel Ahmad Al-Summ Al Naqbi, Director of Traffic and Patrol Department at the General Directorate of Ras Al Khaimah Police, confirmed that the radar known as “sniper” (Al Qunnas) monitors between 100-170 speed violations on the emirate’s roads a day, including 50 to 100 on the internal roads and 50-70 on the external ones.
