The National Centre of Meteorology marked World Tsunami Awareness Day, by hosting an awareness lecture at the Emirates National School as part of the Unesco Affiliated Schools Forum, drawing the participation of 120 students, the faculty and administrative staff.
This year, World Tsunami Awareness Day focuses on sustainably reducing damage from natural disasters to critical infrastructure and the disruption of basic services, including health and educational facilities, by developing resilience by 2030.
The NCM’s event discussed various topics related to tsunamis and seismic activity in the region, the UAE’s tectonic position on the world map, the UAE National Seismic Network, and the seismic activity in the UAE and the neighbouring region based on the recordings of the National Seismic Network.
Other topics included the types of seismic sources in areas bordering the Arab plate, types and causes of tsunamis, the characteristics of the tsunami waves, and the history of tsunamis in the region.
