The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has warned of the weather fluctuations in the coming days, pointing out that the country from Friday to Monday is expected to be affected by a superficial low-air extension, which coincides with a weak extension of low-air in the upper air layers. This may lead to the increase of clouds over the islands, sea and some coastal and northern areas. Cumulus clouds may also form at times with a chance of rainfall. Winds will be active stirring dust. Sea will be moderate in general and occasionally rough with formation of clouds.
The Centre also indicated that starting from Tuesday until Sunday, the air depression in the upper air layers is expected to deepen accompanied by a relatively cold air mass and an air stream pushing clouds from the west in the form of successive waves. Formation of cumulus clouds will remain likely with opportunity of rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning at times over scattered areas. Winds will be active to strong stirring dust and sand with formation of cumulus clouds. Sea will be rough in general and moderate in the Sea of Oman, the NCM added.
Recently, the NCM marked World Tsunami Awareness Day on Nov.5, by hosting an awareness lecture at the Emirates National School as part of the Unesco Affiliated Schools Forum, drawing the participation of 120 students, the faculty and administrative staff.
This year, World Tsunami Awareness Day focuses on sustainably reducing damage from natural disasters to critical infrastructure and the disruption of basic services, including health and educational facilities, by developing resilience by 2030. The NCM’s event discussed various topics related to tsunamis and seismic activity in the region, the UAE’s tectonic position on the world map, the UAE National Seismic Network, and the seismic activity in the UAE and the neighbouring region based on the recordings of the National Seismic Network. Other topics included the types of seismic sources in areas bordering the Arab plate, types and causes of tsunamis, the characteristics of the tsunami waves, and the history of tsunamis in the region.
