The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court, on Wednesday morning, heard the case of an Arab charged with assaulting a policeman and owning narcotics. The Public Prosecution charged the suspect with assaulting a policeman who was on duty and violently resisting him when the latter tried to arrest him, in addition to possession and abuse of amphetamine and methamphetamine. He was also charged with damaging a vehicle after he suddenly swerved and hit it.
The suspect was also charged with transferring the number plate of a vehicle to another, without the approval of the licensing authority.
In court, the suspect denied the charges, and his lawyer demanded innocence.
The lawyer said her client was a victim, as he was assaulted and injured, and that the case papers did not include evidence to prove that the suspect assaulted a policeman, who was anonymous and the case papers did not include anything about him.
The lawyer added, “The surveillance cameras did not prove that the vehicle the suspect drove was the one which damaged the other vehicle.”
The court adjourned pronouncing the verdict to Tuesday, Dec 31. The Dubai Police recently arrested a GCC national driver who fled the scene after killing a woman in a hit-and-run crash, taking advantage that the surveillance cameras did not capture his vehicle’s plate number. However, Dubai Police nabbed the suspect within 12 hours after the traffic accident was reported.
Brigadier Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation at Dubai Police, said the operations room received a tip-off that a woman was severely injured and lying on the street in the Jumeirah 2 area.
A traffic patrol, an ambulance, and paramedics were immediately dispatched to the spot, where it was found an Asian woman in her fifth decade.
The victim was rushed to Rashid Hospital but did not survive due to her severe injuries.
The woman was run over by a car while she crossed the street from an unspecified place. Her head hit the pavement as she fell and died instantly. The driver fled the scene with no physical traces, except a part of his Nissan Partol vehicle.
