Auto-system to monitor tailgaters in Abu Dhabi roads

The Abu Dhabi Police have announced that the auto-monitoring of vehicles whose drivers fail to abide by leaving enough distance between vehicles on roads will take effect as of January 15, 2020.

This will be through a smart system operated via the fixed radars on the emirate’s roads, the police added.

Brigadier Mohammed Dhahi Al Humairi, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Central Operations Division, said that Abu Dhabi Police would carry out an awareness and traffic control campaign to combat the negative behaviors committed by some drivers, particularly tailgaters who get too close to the vehicles in front of them forcing their drivers to get off their path, which could lead to serious traffic accidents .

Al Humairi also explained the police would apply item No.52 of the traffic control rules and procedures No. 178 of 2017 to drivers who fail to leave sufficient distance between vehicles in front of them.

That item states that the fine of such violation is Dhs400 and 4 traffic points on the driver, he added.

During the awareness campaign, tailgaters would receive an SMS warning them of the dangers of failing to leave sufficient distance between the vehicles and that they would be fined in the event of repeating the same violation, he added.

Al Humairi further noted that the campaign would intensify traffic awareness of drivers in five languages through the media and social media channels of the Abu Dhabi Police, so that the largest possible number of motorists will learn about the dire consequences of failure to comply with traffic laws and regulations, especially the non-leaving sufficient distance between vehicles.

Moreover, the Abu Dhabi police will broadcast through their accounts on social networking sites videos of real traffic violations and accidents that occurred on roads of the emirate in order to educate the public about the danger of not leaving enough distance between vehicles on the roads.
