Motorists urged to be careful as thick fog engulfs various parts of UAE

Dense fog covered various parts of the country in the early hours of Monday. The fog, which lasted for 11 hours, led horizontal visibility to decline to the lowest levels and sometimes zero. That was because of the impact of an extension of a surface trough pressure, accompanied with an extension of upper air trough.

Fog began to form at 12:00am on Monday, and gradually cleared after 9:30 in the morning, on some external areas in Abu Dhabi, Jebel Ali in Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Al Dhafra area, and Tarif– Liwa Road.

The lowest temperature in the country was monitored on Jebel Jais, where it reached 9.2°C, and the highest in Umm Al Ramol, where it reached 31.6°C, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).

The NCM has called on drivers and pedestrians to take all necessary precautions when on the roads due to poor visibility because of the fog.
In a statement, the Centre said that poor horizontal visibility is expected at times over some internal areas.

The NCM has also expected the fog to continue on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a slight increase in temperatures ranging between 1-2° C until Friday.

It said that the weather on Tuesday is expected to be partly cloudy and cloudy at times eastward with the probability of some rainfall during daytime. It could be humid by night and Wednesday morning over some western areas, with a chance of fog and mist formation. There could be light to moderate northeasterly to easterly winds, freshening at times, with a speed of 18–30, reaching 40km/hr. The waves will be moderate in the Arabian Gulf and in the Sea of Oman, the NCM added.

It continued, “The weather on Wednesday is expected to be fair to partly cloudy. Humid by night and Thursday morning over some coastal and internal areas with a chance of fog and mist formation. Light to moderate northeasterly to southeasterly winds, with a speed of 16–26, reaching 36km/hr. The sea will be slight to moderate in the Arabian Gulf and in Sea of Oman.”
