Four pedestrian bridges open in Sharjah today

The Sharjah Urban Planning Council will inaugurate on Wednesday four pedestrian bridges on King Faisal Street, King Abdul Aziz Street, Al Ittihad Street and Al Nahda Road at a total cost of Dhs100 million.
This comes in line with the directives of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to ensure the safety of rtoad users and support the road network with new projects according to the highest international standards for the convenience of the emirate’s inhabitants and visitors.
The locations of the bridges were carefully chosen based on several traffic studies and standards, taking in consideration the traffic and pedestrian flows and pedestrian-related accidents in these regions. The bridges were set up in vital places combining establishments, trade centres and markets.
The pedestrian bridges on King Faisal Street, King Abdulaziz Street and Al Ittihad Street were made of steel structures and designed in line with the unique architectural nature of the emirate. They were provided with lifts, staircases and ramps to serve old people and people of determination.
The King Faisal Street bridge is 49 metres long and 4 metres wide and connects Abu Shagara area with Al Majaz 1 area, while the King Abdul Aziz Street bridge is 49 metres long and 4 metres wide and connects Bu Daniq area with Abu Shagara area.
The Al Ittihad Street bridge is 295 metres long and 4 metres wide and connects Al Nahda area with Al Taawun area, while Al Nahda Road bridge is 64 metres long and 4 metres wide and connects both parts of Al Nahda areas.
An earlier report said Abu Dhabi Police – represented by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate – have called on drivers to reduce speed near pedestrian crossings and give priority to pedestrians.
From 1st January until the end of June 2020, the directorate said that the number of violations for not giving pedestrians way in designated areas and not adhering to the speed limit near pedestrian crossing lines, reached 15,588.
Vehicles who fail to give way to those crossing the road will be fined Dhs500 and six black points, the directorate added.
Recently, the Abu Dhabi Police in cooperation with the National Rehabilitation Centre, NRC, and the Zayed Higher Organisation for the People for Determination, ZHO, launched the “Chance for Hope” service to ensure drug prevention and promote societal partnership to curb its spread.
