In a landmark decision regarding women prisoners, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday directed the immediate implementation of the Supreme Court’s Order 299/2020 for the release of Under Trial Women Prisoners and Convicted Women Prisoners who fulfill the criteria of the Order.
In a Twitter on Wednesday, the prime minister said that after a meeting with the Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari, the Attorney General of Pakistan Khalid Jawed Khan, and eminent lawyer Barrister Ali Zafar, he has asked for immediate implementation of the order.
The prime minister said that he has also asked for immediate reports on foreign women prisoners & women on death row for humanitarian consideration.
Out of a total of 73,242 prisoners incarcerated in various jails across Pakistan, 1,121 are female which makes 1.5 per cent of the prison population, according to the official data received by the committee formed by Imran Khan to study and investigate the plight of women in Pakistan’s prisons.
The Head of the Committee Shireen Mazari submitted the Report on “Plight of Women in Pakistan’s Prisons” to the prime minister on May 29.
