Careem raises donation of over Dhs700,000 for Lebanon

In an effort to support the people of Beirut, Careem, the region’s first Super App, in partnership with “Share The Meal”, the World Food Programme, and Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), raised a donation of over Dhs700,000 for Lebanon.

The Careem initiative with “Share The Meal” and the World Food Programme provided customers with an opportunity to use their Careem Rewards points earned through transacting on the Careem Super App to donate in support of those in Lebanon. Careem also matched donations collected in the first few days of the donation program. By donating 3,500 Careem Rewards points, customers can continue to contribute to providing food parcels and emergency support items, such as medicine, to those affected by the Beirut Port explosion. Furthermore, Careem has been providing free rides to people of Beirut wanting to donate blood at the hospitals.

Careem also partnered with Emirates Red Crescent in the UAE to introduce an in-app donation option to provide relief packages to vulnerable families in Beirut. Through the Careem Rewards points, every 3,500 points redeemed with the scheme offered a Careem donation of USD 1 to Emirates Red Crescent. Furthermore, for the first week of the initiative, Careem matched all donations made by customers. Careem customers are still able to donate via Careem Rewards in the Careem Super App.

Gheed El Makkaoui, General Manager of Careem UAE stated: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have been impacted by the recent tragedy in Beirut. At Careem, we will continue to do whatever is in our capacity to support those in need, whether through offering free rides to the hospital on the ground or collecting donations across our markets via the Super App.”

She added: “We are happy to be working with partners making a difference on the ground and hope to continue to offer our support in whatever way we can.”

The explosion in Lebanon’s capital has caused devastation across the city and beyond, leaving thousands injured and over 300,000 people homeless. Through a unified effort with its customers, Careem has and continues to support all those in need since the tragedy struck.
