In a bizarre incident, a car crashed into one of the gates of Makkah Grand Mosque, prompting a security scare in the kingdom.
Local media sources said a Saudi man was behind the wheel. The man has been arrested and an investigation has been launched into the incident.
The Makkah region governorate spokesperson Sultan Al Dosari said that on Friday evening a car hit one of the entrance gate at the Grand Mosque.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the car lost control and hit the gate. The police said there were no reports of any injuries.
The driver has been taken into custody. The police said, “He was referred to the public prosecution."
The video of the incident has been doing the rounds on social media channels.
A video showed a speeding car crashing onto the gates as people run for help. Another clip showed Saudis pushing away the damaged car from the gate of the Holy Mosque.
The Grand Mosque of Makkah resumed congregational prayers in October after months of lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will allow foreigners to perform Umrah from Nov.1.
