6-year-old Emirati boy falls to his death into a manhole in Ras Al Khaimah

A 6-year-old Emirati boy, Rashid Hamad, died after falling into a sewage manhole on Wednesday evening, at his family's house in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.

The incident took place approximately at 8pm on Wednesday, when the child Rashid was playing at the house’s yard, before his mother realized that he was not inside the house, according to the child’s uncle Sultan Rashid.

The boy’s mother searched for him inside and outside the house, but did not find him, so she called her husband, who brought his siblings to look for him, Sultan added.

They saw that the sewage manhole in the yard was partially open due to maintenance work, so they immediately searched for him in the sewage sump.

They searched twice inside the manhole, but he was not found, so they contacted the Civil Defence rescue teams, who rushed to the place, Sultan said.

“Through a long log of wood, a solid object was detected in the bottom. They moved the piece of wood strongly, which led to the child’s body to float,” Rashid’s uncle said.

He added that artificial respiration was performed in order to save his life, but he had passed away.

The search and rescue operation of the child reportedly continued for about an hour, and that the body was transferred to the hospital to take the necessary measures by the competent authorities.

The funeral was carried out on Thursday evening, amid great sadness from his parents and his family, being their eldest and only child.
