The Dubai Criminal Court has sentenced an Asian man to a year in jail, followed by deportation and a fine of Dhs150,000, after he was charged with forgery in Dubai.
The case dates back to December 2016, when an employee of a construction company reported the theft of his wallet, including his ID and other credentials as well as credit cards.
The victim testified that months after the robbery, he was receiving several text messages of phone bills worth Dhs7,000, and fines for traffic violations which he had not committed.
When the victim referred back to the police station, he discovered that the defendant had used his stolen ID to rent a vehicle and make the Dhs7,000 worth phone calls.

Accordingly, police summoned the head of the car rental office, who in turn had confirmed that the defendant was the one who rented a vehicle and committed traffic violations.
Police carried out investigations about the defendant’s whereabouts, and successfully arrested him.
The defendant confessed to buying the stolen ID from another runaway defendant for Dhs500, then forged the ID to commit several frauds.
The defendant bought a SIM card under the victim’s name, and rented a vehicle, thinking that he would not get caught for his actions.
However, he was charged with forgery, and sentenced to 1-year imprisonment with a Dhs150,000 fine by the Dubai Criminal Court.
