Ambassador Ahmed Abdulrahman Al Jarman, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, affirmed the UAE's support for all regional and international efforts to advance the peace process in the Middle East in accordance with the two-state solution, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Al Jarman made the statement during the 30th special session of the Human Rights Council regarding ensuring respect for international human rights law in the Palestinian territories, including occupied East Jerusalem, and in Israel.
He called on the Israeli authorities to reduce the escalation and preserve the religious and legal identity of occupied East Jerusalem, and stressed the sanctity of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and called for an end to evicting Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.
He expressed the UAE's satisfaction with the statement issued by the Security Council on May 22, 2021 in support of the ceasefire reached by the parties in the conflict.
He stressed in this context the need to provide emergency aid to those affected, and to respond to the appeal of the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres to develop an integrated and robust package of support for rapid and sustainable reconstruction and recovery that supports the Palestinian people and strengthens their institutions.
Al Jarman called for continuing diplomatic work to urge the two parties in the conflict to start a serious negotiation path to build the necessary confidence, in a way that guarantees security, stability and a decent life for the Palestinian and Israeli people in the region.
