The Dubai Public Prosecution has referred two African men, along with other runaway accomplices, to Criminal Court for assaulting and robbing an Arab man of Dhs34,000 after luring him through a dating application.
During investigations, the victim testified that he had got to know a lady through MeetMe App for dating, and they exchanged numbers after chatting together and agreeing to meet. “I knew for about 20 days prior the robbery, and she had sent me photos of her and contacted me through two different numbers,” the victim said.
The alleged woman began to tempt the victim and lured him to a hotel room in order to spend time together.
Without hesitation, the victim headed to the hotel room, saying “I knocked at the door and she opened and left it ajar; when I asked her to come out, I was suddenly dragged inside by someone to find that I was surrounded by six African strangers.” The gang included 3 women and 3 men, who began to beat up the helpless victim and tied him up.
They stole his phone and wallet with Dhs4,000, then one of the defendant’s began to chock him in order to give up his visa card’s password.
The victim was assaulted and held hostage until the gang members managed to withdraw Dhs30,000, then they decided to let him go before fleeing the scene.
Police were alerted about the incident, and two of the defendants were identified through their fingerprints.
They were located and arrested.
