India records world’s highest daily coronavirus deaths

India on Thursday reported a record daily rise of 6,148 deaths from COVID-19 over the past 24 hours after a big eastern state revised its figures to account for people who succumbed to the disease at home or in private hospitals, and 94,052 new daily coronavirus cases.
The country's total COVID-19 caseload now stands at 29.2 million, while total fatalities are at 359,676, according to data from the health ministry.
The New York Times estimated deaths based on death counts over time and infection fatality rates and put India's toll at 600,000 to 1.6 million.
The government dismissed those estimates as exaggerated. But the main opposition Congress party said that other states must follow Bihar's example and conduct a review of deaths over the past two months.

The United States had recorded 5,444 COVID-19 deaths on Feb. 12.

This is even as daily infections have been steadily showing a downward trend — with 94,052 fresh COVID infections reported in a day — less than one lakh for the third straight day, according to Agencies.
India earlier registered highest fatalities due to COVID-19 on May 21 with 4,529 deaths, which crossed both the US and Brazil's record deaths in 24 hours. It surpassed US' 4,468 deaths reported on January 12, 2021; and 4,211 in Brazil on April 6, 2021.
Since May 14, India has recorded over 100,000 deaths.
On June 8, India recorded 86,498 cases, lowest since April 2 when the country logged 89,129 new cases.
India's overall tally of COVID-19 cases now stands at 29,183,121 with 1,167,952 active cases and 359,676 deaths so far.
After battling a brutal second wave for weeks, fresh COVID cases came down below the 300,000 mark for the first time on May 17 after touching record high of 414,188 on May 7.

The Health Ministry said that a total of 242,726,693 people have been vaccinated so far in the country, including 3,379,261 who were administered vaccines in the last 24 hours.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, 372,198,253 samples have been tested up to June 9 for COVID-19. Of these 2,004,690 samples were tested on Wednesday.
