Ministry clarifies issue of traffic points

Traffic points are calculated as of the date of payment of the traffic violation, not from the date of committing the violation, according to the statement of Ministry of the Interior.

The ministry indicated that the traffic points system aimed to incrassate the penalty on non-committed drivers to curb them.

The Ministry also explained that traffic points are removed after a year if they do not amount to 24 points during the same period but the fine is not cancelled.

The driver commits a traffic precedent if he commits the cumulative limit of violations and the following measures are taken against him: the driving licence is suspended for three months if it happens the first time and for six months in the second.

If it occurs for the third time, it is suspended for a year and the driver can restore it only after passing a training course in one of the driving institutes.

An earlier report said the Abu Dhabi Police called on drivers to abide by safe driving rules and turn on the vehicle’s lights while driving at night between sunset to sunrise.

They also called on them to use the vehicle lights when necessary to alert others and avoid possible accidents and injuries.

Major Salem Ahmed Al Shamsi of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police said police patrols monitor this type of violations and warn drivers who drive at night without using lights intentionally or unintentionally.

Offenders will be fined Dhs500 and get 4 black points, he added, noting that in the event of repeated violations, within a period of one year from the date of the first violation, the driver in question would be referred to the Public Prosecution.

Al Shamsi called on members of the society to report such violations on the emirate’s roads and streets to the police on 999, noting that such reports would be dealt with instantly and action will be taken against violators.
