Mud volcano causes massive explosion in the Caspian Sea near Azerbaijani gas field

Azerbaijan emergency authorities said a huge explosion occurred in the Caspian Sea late on Sunday, sending a cloud of fire and smoke into the sky.

The area is said to have Azerbaijan offshore oil and gas fields.

Azerbaijan local media said that the facility was not affected in the explosion.

Authorities said the explosion took place late on Sunday.

The geologists expect the blast could have been a mud volcano, however, there is no concrete evidence to suggest the theory. 

The world's largest inland body of water is said to have a huge concentration of volcanoes.

It regularly spews mud and highly flammable gas.

A spokesperson for Azerbaijan’s National Petroleum Corporation said that experts have discovered a mud volcano that is said to be burning.

It is believed to be on the Dashly Island off the coast of country.

Emergency teams inspecting the area said that the mud volcano continues to burn but it is not a threat to any of the oil and gas facilities in the area.
