The residents were surprised by the presence of a newborn child in a bag hanging over the fence, according to local media on Sunday.
The incident occurred last Tuesday, in the city of Norala in the southern Philippines, causing grief on social media, as users demanded the mother to return to her infant child.
"Early this morning we heard the sound of a baby crying," said Marie-Chris Dela Cruz, who lives in the area.
It was weird because we didn't have a baby at home.
We searched for the source of the sound that led us to the front gate, where she found a blue backpack hanging on the fence outside the house.”
She continued, "There was something moving in the bag, it was the child."
The residents quickly transferred the child to the hospital, as medical examinations revealed that the boy is fine.
The unknown infant was taken away by local social services officials who are searching for his parents.
"The child will be in our care even after the parents are found," a spokesperson for the Norala Department of Social Welfare said.
"We just want to remind everyone that parents who are facing difficulties can always ask us for help if they don't know what to do for their children instead of leaving them alone and abandoning them," the spokesperson added.
This is not the first time that a baby has been found in a bag in the Philippines.
In 2018, a newborn baby was found hanging on a pole inside a plastic bag, causing shock among the residents.
