Mass evacuations under way in Japan due to heavy rain

Evacuation orders have been issued for 120,000 residents — figure could be more — in three of Japan’s prefectures amid heavy rains on Saturday, Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) reported, just days after deadly landslides struck the seaside city of Atami southwest of Tokyo.

According to the latest forecasts, up to 200 mm of rainfall are expected on Kyushu in the coming 24 hours. The Japanese meteorological office issued its highest rain alerts in three prefectures on Kyushu island, prompting some local governments to order residents to evacuate.
Another 128,500 people on the island of Kyushu got urgent (level four) evacuation orders.
Around 330 mm of rainfall were recorded in Kagoshima prefecture in the past 12 hours.
