Worker tries to kill his colleague in Dubai, gets jail term followed by deportation

The Dubai Court of Appeal upheld the ruling issued by the Court of First Instance, sentencing an Asian worker to two years in prison and fining him Dhs5,000, over attempting to kill his colleague in a laborers housing.

The convict would be deported after serving the terms, the Court ordered.  

In April 2020, a worker for a contracting company reported that one of his colleagues had been attacked with a knife by another worker.

He stated that the convict came to his room and told him that he had assaulted the victim.

He was carrying a small knife in his hand, and expressed his regret for his act, the worker who reported the incident added.

He further said that the convict told him he had committed his crime because of a previous dispute between them that developed into a verbal altercation.

The convict stabbed the victim in the left side of the abdomen with a knife he had found in the place of altercation.

According to the lawsuit papers, the police dispatched the ambulance to scene from which it transferred the victim to the hospital, while the police arrested the convict.

The forensic report confirmed that the injury led to a hernia and a penetrating injury to the small intestine, which made him unable to work for more than 20 days.

The Criminal Court based its ruling on the absence of premeditated murder charge, as the convict drew a knife that was not in his possession and assaulted the victim by one stab in the lower left abdomen.

The Court sentenced the convict to two years in prison and fined him Dhs5,000, to be followed by deportation. The verdict has been upheld by the Court of Appeal.
