In a bone chilling incident, a six-year-old girl was raped and murdered in the Singareni Colony of Saeedabad area in Hyderabad.
The girl was missing since 5 pm Thursday. The police found the body at midnight in a house in the neighbourhood.
The incident triggered angry protests by people.
Preliminary reports said that the girl was sexually assaulted before being murdered.
Residents blocked ways into the neighbourhood demanding police hand over the accused to them.
Some of the protestors pelted stones and threw chilli powder on policemen.
An additional force was dispatched to the site to maintain law and order.
Police said the accused Raju was absconding and all efforts were being made to arrest him.
Hyderabad District Collector L. Sharman, who tried to pacify the protestors, announced immediate assistance of Rs50,000 to the victim's family.
The victim's family moved from the Nalgonda area to earn a living.
The father is a rickshaw driver.
