An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred early morning on Monday at 2:18am local time near San Antonio de los Cobres, Salta, Argentina, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.
According to preliminary data, the quake was at a depth of 200km (124.27 miles), EMSC said. The quake was located at an intermediate to considerable depth of 180km.

Its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms, may have tempered the strength of the earthquake.
The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
