The Public Prosecution explained that a video clip was spotted depicting a person on social media driving a vehicle at a speed of up to 300km per hour on a main street in Abu Dhabi.
The owner of the account used was identified and the necessary legal measures were taken, the public prosecution said, noting that the suspect has a wide base of young fans and this might encourage them to follow suit.
The photo has been used for illustrative purposes.
These irresponsible behaviors on the part of young people pose a threat to their lives and the lives of other road users, the Public Prosecution said, stressing the need for educational and community authorities to co-operate with the authorities concerned and for awareness campaigns to be intensified to put an end to reckless driving on roads.
The Public Prosecution pointed out that Article 348 of the Federal Penal Code stipulates that ‘shall be sentenced to detention and/or to a fine, whoever deliberately perpetrates an act that exposes the life, health, security or freedom of human beings to danger.’
The Public Prosecution called on social media users to be responsible towards the media materials they post, particularly that most of the followers are young people, which would encourage others to follow suit and hence be subject to legal accountability.
